The folding smartphone has just started to be a thing and seems to have come to stay. Huawei is the first brand to break into this category with their Mate “X” series. Xiaomi also tapped into this category. We recently shared that Samsung is planning to launch a new folding smartphone very soon. The renders of the Flip 3 clamshell device and the Fold 3 was also shared.
Folding smartphone are still at their early stage. They need a lot of improvement. Their prices are also high too but when they start to be mass-produced by different companies, the price will surely drop. Speaking about companies, Apple is trying to dive into this bandwagon.
The Apple analysts, Ming-Chi Kuo, revealed that Apple is working on their foldable smartphone. The foldable is said to be due in 2023 and they are expected to produce between 15 to 20 million units. Ming-Chi Kuo also said that some industry sources revealed to him that the Apple foldable phone display will measure 8 inches in diagonal.
It will be a QHD+ resolution display. In Kuo words, he said:
Based on our latest industry survey, we forecast that Apple will likely launch a foldable iPhone with an 8-inch QHD+ flexible OLED display in 2023, with SDC as the exclusive display supplier and Samsung Foundry as the exclusive DDI foundry provider. Based on Apple’s requested capacity plan, we predict that the foldable iPhone shipments will reach 15-20 million units in 2023. We expect that the foldable iPhone will adopt TPK’s silver nanowire touch solution because of its several advantages over SDC’s Y-Octa technology.
The Analyst also said that by the end of this or the beginning of 2022, companies like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Honor will join the bandwagon. They will likely produce about 17 million units. This shows that foldable phones might be cheaper starting next year. Fingers crossed.
